Contraceptive Patch

What is the contraceptive patch and how does it work?

The contraceptive patch is a thin, beige, sticky patch, which releases a daily dose of the hormones oestrogen and progestogen into the bloodstream through the skin.

It stops a woman releasing an egg each month (ovulation). It can be worn on the arm, buttock or lower abdomen. Each patch lasts 7 days, after which it is removed and a new one applied immediately.

What are the advantages?

  • Only have to remember to change it once a week
  • It does not interfere with sex and is easy to use
  • It may help premenstrual symptoms

What are the disadvantages?

  • It is visible
  • Occasionally it causes skin irritation
  • It does not protect against STIs
