Contraceptive Ring

What is the ring and how does it work?

The contraceptive ring (Nuvaring) is a new device which contains oestrogen and progestogen hormones and works in a similar way to the combined pill. The ring is worn inside the vagina for 3 weeks out of every 4.
If used correctly, the ring is over 99% effective.

What are the advantages?

  • One ring will provide contraception for a month, so you don’t have to think about it every day
  • It doesn’t interrupt sex, as you can have sex with the ring in place
  • If you are sick or have diarrhoea the ring is still as effective as usual, unlike the pill
  • The ring may help with premenstrual symptoms, and bleeding will probably be lighter and less painful

What are the disadvantages?

  • May cause temporary side effects, for example more vaginal discharge than usual, breast tenderness and headaches
  • Sometimes, the ring can come out on its own (called expulsion), particularly during or after sex, or if you're constipated. If it does, it should be rinsed in warm water and replaced as soon as possible
  • The ring doesn’t protect you from STIs
