Recent reports in the national news have raised concerns over the safety of the contraceptive implant Implanon. A small number of women have become pregnant over the past 10 years because their implant was not fitted correctly.
If you are using a contraceptive implant, do not panic – it remains a very safe and effective form of contraception. If you are using Implanon and you have concerns, either about pregnancy or that the implant has not been fitted correctly, you should go to your GP or nearest sexual health clinic.
A new type of implant, called Nexplanon, has been recently introduced to replace Implanon. This new implant is designed to reduce the risk of inserting it incorrectly.
The implant is still one of the most effective ways of preventing pregnancy. It is 99 per cent effective.
