Playin' It Safe

Pregnancy

If you don’t want an unplanned pregnancy it is important to use a reliable method of contraception every time you have sex.

A woman can get pregnant if she has sex without using contraception, or if something stops the contraceptive method from working properly (e.g. if she misses a pill, or if a condom splits or slips off).

If you think you might be pregnant, the first thing to do is take a test to find out for sure. Free pregnancy tests and confidential pregnancy advice is available at Time 4U services, sexual health clinics, family planning association (FPA), your doctor or GP and some school nurses and youth workers.

You can get free emergency contraception (link to emergency contraception) if you have had unprotected sex within the last 72 hours. Emergency contraception can be given up to 5 days after unprotected sex.

If you have found out that you are pregnant, you need to think carefully about what is best for you. It's important to make the decision that is right for you, but don't ignore the situation and hope it will go away.

You are not on your own. You can talk to a parent or family member, your boyfriend, doctor, school nurse, teacher, youth worker or contact us.

If you have found out you are not pregnant, now might be a good time to think contraception and get some advice about the best method for you.
